The world’s largest oil producing nation, UAE, is doing the last thing you would ever expect: they want to reduce gasoline consumption.
The United Arab Emirates’ president announced this month he will add specially formulated esters to the government’s gasoline, which will reduce fuel use by improving the gas mileage of all vehicles. It is also shown to reduce toxic emissions.
On Thursday, April 24, CNN Money reported that “Dubai’s royal family and United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed…plan to implement Ethos FR directly into Dubai’s state-owned fuel supply.” The report attributes this to the fact that President Bin Zayed, is “dedicated to the well-being of his people and the environment.”
The United States could also use this liquid to reduce the nation’s dependency on gasoline (and clean the air), but doesn’t. The most bizarre part is that the UAE isn’t buying this gas-saver from the Middle East or China or India, but from San Diego, where the product is manufactured.
Ethos is a liquid formula of esters, a non-toxic, naturally occurring material. The California manufacturer is a publicly-traded company in business for ten years, but hasn’t gained the attention of US lawmakers.
The Ethos product does have private supporters, including Allied Waste Services of San Diego. The company reports decreased fleet emissions by 71 percent, which earned them an Earth Day Corporate Award from the City of San Diego.
Recently, the City of North Miami’s test vehicles showed a 12% improvement in gas mileage, and reduced emissions by up to 30%. North Miami uses approximately 300,000 gallons of fuel per year, which equates to an emissions reduction of 500 tons per year with the use of Ethos.
Outside the US. Ethos received the Quality Award from the government of Mexico, and public recognition from African environmental agencies who praise the effectiveness of Ethos.
While 20 nations in the Middle East have agreed to join the UAE in using this product to reduce gasoline use, Congress and most state and local agencies remain silent. At a recent environmental press conference, Austin mayor Will Wynn said, “You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, after they have thoroughly exhausted every other alternative.”
